The Beauty and Simplicity of an LDS Temple Sealing: What to Expect

Bride in elegant white dress and her groom, kissing outside LDS temple walls, symbolizing the beauty and simplicity of an LDS Temple Sealing ceremony.

For LDS brides and grooms, the journey to the altar is unlike any other, culminating in a sacred sealing ceremony within the temple. It's a moment of profound significance, yet it comes with nuances that are best appreciated when fully understood beforehand. Unfortunately, not knowing what to expect has left some newlyweds feeling a touch underwhelmed, missing the understated grandeur of the occasion. Here's a closer look at what to expect during an LDS temple sealing, ensuring that your special day is as meaningful and memorable as it is meant to be.

The Essence of Simplicity and Spirituality

First and foremost, it's crucial to recognize that an LDS temple sealing is marked by its simplicity and spiritual depth, rather than the pomp of traditional weddings. There's no grand musical procession, no walking down the aisle, and no wedding party. Instead, the bride and groom, dressed in white and the sacred ceremonial attire from their endowment, are joined by a select group of guests in their Sunday best—each of whom must hold a current LDS temple recommend.

The Ceremony: A Moment of Eternal Promises

The sealing itself is brief but brimming with eternal significance. After receiving personal counsel from the temple sealer, the couple kneels across an altar from each other. The words spoken are few, but they encapsulate promises and blessings of immense depth. Both participants affirm their commitment by saying “yes” to the terms of the sealing, a moment of covenant that transcends the temporal.

While the exchange of rings and a kiss may follow, it's important to note that these acts are not part of the official sealing ceremony and are often saved for a ring ceremony at the wedding reception.

Managing Expectations and Guest Comfort

Given the sacred nature of the sealing ceremony, the guest list is naturally limited to family and very close friends. However, it's worth noting that temple schedules can run late, potentially leading to lengthy waits for those not attending the sealing. To ensure the comfort and happiness of your guests, consider appointing a host or hostess to entertain those waiting outside the temple, or inform them of the scheduled time for post-sealing photographs.

A Note from the Editor

As you embark on this eternal journey together, remember the importance of returning to the temple. Attending sealings as a couple allows you to revisit the sacred promises made on your wedding day, deepening your understanding and commitment to each other with each visit. The first sealing may pass in a blur of emotion, but the covenants made are the foundation of a lasting, loving relationship.

We at LDS Wedding Planner wish you a lifetime of joy and spiritual growth. May your marriage be as fulfilling as it is eternal.

Warmest wishes,
